An ISO 9001 certificate is normally valid for three years from the date of issue.

To keep the certificate active during this period, the certification body conducts surveillance audits, usually once every twelve months, to confirm the QMS continues to meet the standard.

Before the three-year validity ends, the organisation must undergo a recertification (renewal) audit. This reassessment is typically planned ahead of expiry so the certificate can be renewed for a further three-year term without a break in certification. Failure to undergo surveillance or recertification audits can lead to suspension or withdrawal of the certificate.
